José Bernardo de la Meana
St. Thomas

Circa 1753-62
Cathedral of St. Savior, Oviedo

The plaque at the base of the statue identifies the figure as St. Thomas, but the mattock in the saint's right hand is puzzling. A mattock is a tool used for digging and chopping the earth. I have not seen any references in Thomas's hagiography to such a tool, or indeed to any agricultural pursuits.
